Summary

Thinking Murray the Monster is betraying the idea of being a monster by putting on a charade to sell merchandise, Oblina, Krumm, and Ickis try to teach him to actually be scary. However, Oblina, Krumm, and Ickis are shocked when they realize that Murray is just wearing a costume and is actually a merchandise salesman pretending to be a monster for financial gain.

They proceed to frighten him by tapping into his brain via a lobotomy-style implementation and this forces him to acquire a fear of monsters and stops him from his charade of salesmanship. This also traumatizes Murray and he is later seen working in the stores putting up merchandise as opposed to selling it.

Plot

At a local toy store, a human employee is stacking lizards when his boss, his father, tells him that lizards are out and Murray the Monster is in. The Monsters appear and attempt to scare the humans. Later, a mysterious person in a Murray the Monster costume appears and puts on a show for the kids. The Monsters watch this discreetly and look at him with contempt. When the person in the monster suit tells their children that "monsters are people too" and that they are "not scary," The Monsters decide to devise a plan to save him.

They ride under the limousine that Murray has got inside of and the vehicle encounters a red light. The Monsters look through to find pictures of Murray in newspapers at the newsstand. The limousine then comes to a TV studio and Murray goes on stage, where a bunch of anticipating children cheer for him. Murray puts on an act and gives out merchandise of him to the children. The Monsters watch in contempt and think that Murray is betraying the orthodox tradition of monsters. Ickis gets picked up by a boy and wants to by him.

They sneak into his private dressing room (since they were mistaken for humans in costumes by a guard) and confront Murray. Krumm knocks him out with a powerful stench and The Monsters attempt to shove him inside the toilet. But he doesn't fit through. It isn't long before the mask comes off and they discover that Murray is really a human being in a monster costume. So to teach him a lesson for tainting the monsters tradition, Oblina taps into his brain via a lobotomy-style implementation.

Murray later dreams of himself in his monster costume asking the children if they would like a Murray doll. But the children show aversion to them and demand a refund. Murray runs inside his store and comes across a number of scary toys, who chase after him. Murray runs inside a dollhouse and encounters Ickis, Oblina and Krumm. The Monsters rebuke him for giving monsters a bad name and coerce him to quit his business. Murray runs away in terror.

He is later seen waking up back in consciousness after his nightmare. Later, he continues to sell his merchandise to the kids on stage. So The Monsters proceed in scaring him for real and the salesman runs away in terror. In the end, it is revealed that Murray dolls and merchandise is now obsolete due to the traumatizing scaring he received.

Trivia

  • Murray the monster is an obvious parody of Barney the Dinosaur. and he does share several traits with Barney including being purple, as well as performing in live shows and having plenty of merchandise themed after him.
  • Murray has a simple catch-phrase: "Uh-Huh! Uh-Huh!" He says this in both a positive and joyous way when attempting to sell products and with a sad undertone when admitting to something negative.
  • In the beginning of the episode, an employee places Lizard dolls in a section of the store and the manager says "No, No, No! Not the Lizards! How many times do I have to tell you, Lizard out! Murray in!" After all the events of the episode, as a connective point to the very beginning, Murray is seen working in the store and placing Murray dolls on display, to which the manager says "No, No, No! Not Murray! That guy is washed up! How many times do I have to tell you, Murray out! Frogs in!"
  • Bart Simpson from The Simpsons can be seen in the crowd of young fans cheering for Murray while waving his red hat. This is likely because both Gabor Csupo and Peter Gaffney collaborated with Matt Groening for The Simpsons, since Csupo worked on the animation for the first 4 seasons while Peter Gaffney is in fact a Simpsons writer.
